But you can still edit appearance of your leader and change their starting traits. Only big issue for me is you can't cherry pick your class and race. And I'm sure you can guess how some of the assembly bro's are. For instance, "freedom fighter vanguard" that hates the idea of enslavement of other species, so works closely with anyone diplomatic. But the other leaders on the campaign map actually stick to the personality the story gives them. And I will go ahead and warn you right now that almost every objective that says "investigate this" is followed by a battle. Now, some things do feel a little scripted. Missions have different completion paths that have consequences in later missions, which leads me to believe there are multiple endings just like some of the previous games campaigns. I encourage you guys to try planetfall's campaign. And the fun that can come with trying different race and class combos on different kinds of maps. I have been a huge fan of scenarios for awhile.
